Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue - 5

I would like to say this.
My shutter button issue has been fixed perfectly. Since the fix has been done I haven't experimented any shutter issue.

Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue - 4

It was about two weeks ago, my EOS 50D came back from Canon Repair Centre from Sydney.

I tested several shots with Canon EF 50mm F1.8, and confirmed the shutter button issue has been fixed. To be honest, a few days from the return, I was worry about if the issue could be recurred. However, now I don't need to worry about if I miss my chance or not.

When I look the rubber cover of 50D hand grip, it seems to be cleaner than before. I should say white things are in the rubber cover.  I no longer see them. It is looked like it was replaced. This is a good sign for me because when I had my 50D had repair first time, it was looked like hasn't been touched.

This feeling makes me doing this.
I used a program to check the shutter counter before and after the second repair as Canon's word "rework".

This is before the rework;

Then, next one is after the rework;
According to software, EOSInfo (http://astrojargon.net/), 22349 - 22151 = 198 shot was done as checking the shutter issue and confirm the shutter issue has been fixed. Thank you EOSInfo and Canon Australia.

This repair was done under Canon's extended 3-year warranty. I wonder if I didn't purchase the extended warranty and asked same repair out of warranty. I have asked Canon Repair Centre.

Canon IXUS 115 HS

While I was waiting for my camera back from repair, I have notice how I am in photography. My budget can't allow me to buy another Digital SLR so I bought Canon IXUS 115 HS. (Canon Australia page)

I was thinking to get other models like IXUS 220 HS. But IXUS 115 HS is satisfied from my needs.
  1. Image Stabilizer (IS)
  2. Wider lens than 35mm (35mm film equivalent)
  3. Full HD recording - 24fps
  4. Long exposure - maximum 15 seconds
  5. Miniature Effect mode
  6. Underwater housing - 3m (Reasonably priced)
I have seen many camera but under A$300 with underwater housing and Full HD movie recoring, I could not find my needs.
I bought IXUS 115 HS A$229 at JB Hi-Fi some where in Perth suburb. I'll probably order an underwater housing online. It's about A$65.

In addition, I didn't expect to use Macro mode. This is an example photo of Macro mode.
This IXUS 115 HS is quite smart, if you close to object, it is automatically changing Macro mode (showing flower icon). I think the image quality is fantastic. It was bright sunny day.

Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue - 3

A week later, Friday my 50D was sent to the Repair Centre again.

Following week, I have no contact or update from the Centre. I wanted to be informed from them but, I could not wait and sent a message to check the status through their repair track form on the Canon Australia website.
Same person, I talked to on the phone replied to me in email the repair is final phase.

I wish they will send it back to me soon.

Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue - 2

A week later, I sent my Canon EOS 50D to Canon Repair Centre in Sydney, I received my 50D. One relief was my extended warranty has covered the repair and charge me none.

As soon as I tried to take a photo, I noticed the shutter button issue wasn't fixed (was still remained).

According to the documentation, they replaced parts for shutter button but I couldn't believe because I needed to take a photo to press and hold the shutter button. I closely looked rubber parts around my grip area, and was looked very well sealed. They must have done good job.
I sent another request form and Canon Repair Centre to seek further treatment through their website at the night.

Following business day I received a reply email to ask me to send my 50D to them again. I had not choice but to send my 50D to them. I do hope Canon fix the shutter properly.

Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue

I have owned a Canon EOS 50D since December 2008, and enjoyed a photography life with 50D.

I didn't need to worry about anything about this camera as well as my Canon lens collection until I have a funny feeling on my 50D's shutter button. Autofocus works fine every time pressing a half shutter button but once every a few shots, I needed to do these;

  1. press and hold the shutter button or
  2. press hard the shutter button

Rarely taking a photo without frustration. I should say this is Canon EOS 50D shutter button issue. This happened May 2011. I checked my camera shots counter. it was just over 21,000 shots. 50D shutter should last 100,000 shorts (this indicates shutter unit not button).

I tested other Canon lenses manual mode. It didn't make any difference. When I use remote controller, I had no problem to take a photo. This result made me think physically the shutter button has got an issue.

Well, I didn't take time to find this shutter issue is well known (might be common problem) between Canon EOS middle ranges camera issue.
I've found YouTube explain and show us how to clean the shutter button. It is not easy to reach shutter button parts. You need to know how to assembly and reassembly camera well. Otherwise you need to send your camera to Canon service centre.

When I purchase 50D, I chose a Premierum kit was on sale Camera House in Western Australia. So luckily the kit came with Canon genuine 3 year extended warranty. Repairing my 50D was covered by the extended warranty.

I contacted to Canon Australia and check if I need to pay my freight to send my camera to them. The answer was I need to pay by myself but when Canon send camera back to me,they will pay for the freight. To me, it doesn't make sense because it still under warranty. However, I have not choice but to accept Australian rules.

I posted with registered and with insurance for my 50D. It cost about A$20 for freight and A$20 for insurance (the camera value A$1,500 which I indicate).

Canon EF85mm F/1.8 USM

Today I'd like to talk about a new Canon lens recently.

I have been using my Canon EF85mm F/1.8 USM on 50D. It is a fantastic lens I have ever used. This is obvious because I wanted to experiment a Canon USM lens. I have owned EF-S18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 IS.

If I personally can tell my opinion both of those lenses then you might understand why EF85mm F/1.8 is a nice lens. Most people presume USM is quicker focus speed than non-USM lenses. In these case, my answer is Yes. However, EF-S18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 IS provides a quick auto focus speed at decent light circumstances. I was initially believing USM lens do much quicker auto focus but I am not convinced the speed of auto focus. If you use 'one shot' mode. At the current experience, I can not tell advantages of using the lens for moving object.

EF85mm F/1.8 USM is much quieter than EF-S 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 IS. For my use, I don't usually take photographs in a very quiet environment so I don't get a benefit from USM performance in noise factor.

It is not difficult to find purple fringe if you take a photo in a bright condition such as wave at beach. If you like to catch a wind surfer with his/her actions with splash of water, it will be very easy to find the matter. Does it sound negative? If you take this in the way, I need to let you know what I like. This is a unique attitude of EF85mm F/1.8 USM. I take this attitude positive way.

This is a very fast lens. F/1.8 will provide a nice blur at out of focus area. If you want to isolate a subject from others, the wide open aperture lets you take a nice creative photograph. In my case, I use F/1.8 when I take a flower in bunch of flowers. So I can get a beautiful background and a focused subject. but I can't make an additional story for the photograph. I think a nice photography has always a nice title and a brief comment.

I have written and thought about beneficial aspects so far, and have found I am probably not experiencing enough to talk about EF85mm F/1.8 USM.  Although I am enjoying to take photos with it.
